‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ and ‘The Revenant’ lead the 2016 CAS Awards film nominees

'The Hateful Eight,' 'Bridge of Spies' and 'Mad Max: Fury Road' also make the cut
"Star Wars: The Force Awakens"

The Cinema Audio Society announced their 2016 CAS Awards nominees this morning and it looks like the major players in Oscar’s sound categories are falling into place.

The nominees for Achievement in Sound Mixing for a Motion Picture – Live Action went to “Bridge of Spies,” “The Hateful Eight,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “The Revenant ” and “Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.”  The CAS doesn’t give out a specific Sound Editing honor, but in comparison to the BAFTA Awards’ singular Best Sound category announced last week the only film not in the mix was “The Martian” (“The Hateful Eight” didn’t make the cut in that case).  Other potential Academy Award contenders in look for when the nominations are announced on Thursday in both the Best Sound Mixing and Sound Editing categories inclue “Sicario,” “Inside Out” and “SPECTRE.”  Many still expect “Mad Max,” “The Revenant,” “Bridge of Spies” and “Star Wars” to be the key players in both races.

In the Motion Picture – Animated category expected Oscar nominee “Anomalisa” wasn’t part of the, um, mix as traditional fare such as “Inside Out,” “The Good Dionsaur,” “Hotel Transylvania 2,” “Minions” and “The Peanuts Movie” rounded out the field.

You can get details on all of this year’s CAS Awards nominees, including the television categories, below.

The CAS Awards will be handed out on Feb. 20, 2016 in Los Angeles.
